screenshotAs a product, Basecamp from 37signals, is not only appropriate for use by well-established companies, but can be an essential tool for new and emerging businesses that need to organize their projects in a structured way.

App-Easy is a new startup company that is producing iPhone apps.  The company comprises individuals that work full-time in paid jobs.  As a working environment, this presented a number of challenges in pulling together a coherent app, distributing and then marketing it.  The solution? The company turned to Basecamp to help organize and manage its app development.

As an on-demand, collaborative, project management application, coupled with its simplistic and easy-to-use interface, Basecamp was the ideal option to help keep the distributed team linked.

Danny Rhodes, one of the founding members said: “We needed a way to keep everyone connected together so that they could work at time to suit themselves but still have access to what the others had been doing. So, while Tony was researching and editing the data for the trivia database, Jack was building the framework of the basecampapp itself and Laura was producing marketing and sales materials. Laura would need screenshots and Jack could simply upload them into the shared document are of our Basecamp account.”

Danny ran the project, with tasks listed and allocated in Basecamp.  The project document repository was the ideal way of sharing documents, screenshots and other information will all the team members.  Working evenings, weekends and even stealing a little time during free moments at their paid jobs, the team were able to work effectively, always up to speed with the latest progress and information and able to get on immediately without having to search for information and status updates. Basecamp allowed each of the team members to update their tasks directly in the project plan and upload the latest versions of documents and files they appeasywere working on.  Laura was able to quickly post drafts of product information and press-releases for the others to review and comment on.

“Given our limited budget to get up and running, we needed a product that could help organize our activities without breaking the bank.  We used the free trial initially and then our preferred option was the $49 a month, allowing us to start planning for our other apps. I’d definitely recommend Basecamp to any small business that is trying to get itself established.  We’ve found it invaluable!” Danny added.

Their first app is a simple trivia app for iPhone and iPod called Horsey Facts and it’s available on the App Store at only $0.99 / £0.69 and can be downloaded from:, or simply type Horsey Facts into the App Store search box.
