cd workspaceToday’s electronic marketplace is full of online services that aim to help organizations to manage their project and business activities in a collaborative way and Central Desktop is one such application, that boasts and intuitive and easy-to-use interface yet offering comprehensive functionality. Larger organizations will, without a doubt, find benefit in implementing collaborative technologies, but, does Central Desktop really hit the mark for those much small companies, with only two or three members, that are trying to get ahead or is it more hassle than it’s worth?

Equinox-Apps is a new startup-up business specializing in the development of equestrian iPhone/iPod apps. Working in a niche market, they enter at a time when companies are recognizing the value to be had by exploiting this previously untapped area.

So what are they looking for to give them the edge and make their products successful? “Of course, the quality of apps is paramount and have to hit the mark in terms of delivering exactly what our users need,” said Marketing Director, Barbara Gibbs. “Beyond that, we need to make sure we hit the market first and, when we do, that people actually buy! That means our information has to be targeted and high quality and we need to be sure of meeting our release and marketing timescales.”

Initially, operating with a single ‘info’ mailbox, the two-person company was struggling to share documents and other information effectively. Neither knew who was accessing the emails in the shared mailbox that they both accessed from smartphones. In addition, as both worked from home, there was no central server available on which to store their information.

Not entirely convinced, Barbara, who is not the most IT literate, signed up for the free account option with Central Desktop and quickly became productive. “I was able to enter my tasks and Jean, my partner, was able to see and update them. I could create a document, upload it and Jean could see the work in progress and Jean was uploading screenshots for me to use in our promotional materials. We were actively collaborating without having to send emails back and forth all the time.”

Equinox-Apps is due to release its flagship app, BE Dressage Tests, early in December, 2011 and will follow up with other apps in the same space. Check out their website at

The forever free account option for Central Desktop allows up to 5 users so would suit the smaller businesses that don’t have the budget to commit to monthly subscriptions for the benefit of the business tools to help them to prosper. Included in the account is up to 1 Gb of storage space for documents and a single workspace for organising projects and tasks.
