Hot! Transitioning From Basecamp

  • Sharebar

I was having a conversation last week with the owner/developer of a widely used Basecamp Application and I wanted to share the conversation with you. He and I were discussing people transitioning from Basecamp – ie they are using basecamp as their primary collaboration or project management tool, but have decided, to move to another solution. Here’s what I was able to gather:

  • A majority of the users of this particular application have revealed that they will be moving to an inhouse or internal tool to manage their projects.
  • Other SAAS services are 2nd on people’s list – These included Wrike, Liquid Planner, Zoho & 5pm Web – I have investigated all of these with the exception of Liquid Planner (I will review in future posts).
  • Sharepoint
  • Nothing – many companies/projects going away (out of business)

    Hi Daria,

I definitely am. I hadn’t heard of it until last week, but now it seems it is everywhere. Isn’t that the way with a new product/service or even word you learn of? More to come.

LiquidPlanner is an excellent option and they are about to release their API from BETA. This will open up even more opportunities. What I found (as I’m sure others did too) is that Basecamp is decent as a collaboration site but is lacking so many other useful features for serious project management (reliable scheduling, task prioritization, time tracking, reporting), that I needed LiquidPlanner to really help me manage my projects. LP gives me a great collaboration system along with a whole other list of valuable features.

I look forward to hearing your impressions of the system!

We (Clarizen) just posted a case study last week (http://www.clarizen.com/Resources/CaseStudies/AstonishResults.aspx) of yet another team ‘growing out of Basecamp’.
Basecamp is a great collaboration tool but when it comes to core PM features, such as dependencies and hierarchies, you’re best off looking elsewhere.
